It was sold as spares or repairs - no tax or MOT in November 2001. |
| Notes |
I bought this Capri in October 2000 from a fellow enthusiast who lived round the corner from me in Potters Bar, Herts. He had 3 Capri's at the time - a beautiful black 2.0S and 2 silver 2.8i's. He then put one of his 2.8i's up for sale and I went and had a look. It was clean inside and had new wings and rear wheelarches but was still a bit rusty around the engine bay and the handbrake needed adjusting. The power steering gave more assistance when turning right rather than left too. There was no service history with it, literally just the V5. However when I took it for a drive, I just had to have it. £600 later and the beastie was mine. The noise it made was intoxicating and whenever you put your foot down, everything in your peripheral vision just went all blurry, even if 1 tank of petrol only lasted 150 miles. The legacy of a 2.8 litre V6 and binding brakes, I guess. Good job I didn't use it that often. While owning this Capri, I had 2 others on the go, so they eventually had to go. I kept the 2.8 and wanted to restore it a bit in my spare time as I was commuting on public transport and didn't need a car that often. I let the tax and MOT lapse and one afternoon while starting the engine for a regular warming up, I noticed a few cracks on the suspension turrets and chassis legs. It was time for it to go. I sold it to a mechanic one dark November 2001 evening for £450 and he said he was going to restore it. About 6 months later, I was missing Capri ownership, so I started scouting for another one on the AutoTrader website. There were a few around and one was advertised as follows: "Ford Capri 2.8i Special, B reg . silver, unmarked half leather, recaro interior, alloys, pas, s/r, well cared for example with history, hpi clear, must be seen, no timewasters. - £995" So I called thinking this car was everything my old silver Capri wasn't - only to find it WAS my old silver Capri. I was able to tell it was mine because I listed off all the things that were wrong with it. I asked about the handbrake. He said the handbrake needed adjusting. I asked if the power steering pulled to one side. The chap said, "they all do that, you won't find a Capri 2.8 that won't". So if you ever come across this example, check the "history" that came with it - it sure as hell didn't have any when I bought and sold it... |

Quite a few admiring glances - the bodywork looked great, even if it was a basket case underneath. |

Heard about the Drive Archive on Steve Wright in the afternoon on BBC Radio 2 and loved the idea. |
